What Basketball Taught Me About My Marriage

Our marriage was like one of those never-ending losing basketball seasons.

You know the one. You still show up to grueling practices, search for the problem, try a little harder, lift a little heavier, and watch the game film repeatedly, yet the losses keep coming.

Have you ever watched a team with so much potential but who just can't seem to put it together?

They have a few highs but far too many losses.

Being part of a team like that is exhausting.

Have you ever reached a place where no matter how much sweat, tears, or effort you poured in, nothing seemed to change?

That was our marriage for years.

At times, it felt like we were playing on two different teams. Instead of working together, we defended against each other. We stayed in practice, competing for the same position, and forgot to leave the competition on the court.

Taking over the point guard position became my way of trying to make our marriage work. I took on more responsibility, believing if I could just do more, things would get better.

Until I couldn't do it anymore.

Then God led me back to the place where life had always made sense to me, the basketball court.

Only this time, He showed me I needed a new Coach.
A new Point Guard.
One who would set the pace, call the plays, and lead our marriage the way it was designed to be led.

Jesus never asked me to carry our marriage. He simply asked me to follow Him.

That realization changed everything.

That's why I wrote The Jesus Performance, a marriage devotional that uses lessons from the basketball court to point couples back to Christ.

My prayer is that through these devotions, you'll stop competing against one another, start playing on the same team, and discover the true victory that only Jesus can bring.

So grab your jersey.

Lace up your shoes.

It's time to hit the gym.
