Your Position
Throughout my basketball career, I played the point guard position. Not because it was what I chose, but because at 5'3", it was the position that naturally fit me.
As the point guard, my job was to know the plays inside and out, understand each player's role, and keep everything moving on the court. The point guard sets the pace, calls the offense, and helps the team function as one.
That position works well on the basketball court.
It doesn't work so well in marriage.
At least not if we want our marriage to become all Christ created it to be.
What if taking over the point guard position in marriage actually takes the ball out of the True Point Guard's hands?
Can you imagine grabbing the basketball out of your teammate's hands because you wanted to be in control? We'd never think of doing that during a game, yet how often do we do exactly that in our marriages?
It's so easy to step in and try to direct our husband's heart. We try to call the next play, fix the problem, or convince him of what he should do. I've found myself doing exactly that more times than I can count.
But every time I take over the point guard position, nothing really changes. I may control the moment, but I can't change a heart.
The truth is, I don't know what plays my husband needs.
Jesus does.
When I surrender my position and allow Jesus to be the True Point Guard, He begins to call the plays that neither of us could see.
He leads.
He convicts.
He restores.
And He does the heart work that I was never created to do.
The more I trust Him to lead our team, the more room I give Him to transform both my husband and me.
Reflecting on our roles in marriage is important. When we understand the position God has called us to play, and trust Jesus to lead, we can stop striving to control the game and start experiencing the freedom that comes from following the greatest Coach and Point Guard our marriage will ever have.
Maybe today, the greatest play you can make is simply handing Jesus the ball.
